SOFAS & CHAIRS
Re-upholstering involves replacing the fabric, padding, and sometimes the internal structure of the sofa/chair to give it a fresh, updated look. This process can extend the life of a beloved piece of furniture, especially if it has a sturdy frame or sentimental value. Here’s a breakdown of what’s involved in re-upholstering a sofa or chair:.
1. Assessment of Condition of the Frame: Before re-upholstering, it’s essential to check the condition of the sofa’s frame. If the frame is damaged, it might need to be repaired or reinforced. Springs and Cushions: Springs might need to be replaced or re-tied, and cushions may require new padding or foam. This step is crucial for maintaining the comfort of the piece.
2. Removing the Old Fabric: The first physical step in re-upholstery is to strip off the old fabric carefully. This also involves removing staples, tacks, and any other fasteners. As the fabric is removed, it’s important to keep track of the pieces, as they can be used as a pattern for cutting the new fabric.
3. Selecting New Fabric. Fabric Type: The choice of fabric is critical and depends on your style preferences and the sofa/chair’s usage. Durable fabrics like microfiber, leather, or heavy-duty cotton are common choices for frequently used furniture. Colour and Pattern: The new fabric should match or complement your room’s decor. Consider how the color and pattern will look on a large piece of furniture.
4. Cutting and Sewing: The new fabric is cut according to the patterns taken from the old upholstery. This stage requires precision to ensure a good fit. The fabric pieces are then sewn together, creating the cover for the sofa/chair. Any piping, buttons, or tufting details are added during this step.
5. Reassembling: The new fabric is attached to the sofa/chair, starting with the larger sections and working down to the details. The fabric is usually secured with staples or tacks. Cushions are re-stuffed, and any decorative elements, such as skirts or arms, are finished.
6. Final Touches: Once the fabric is securely in place, the sofa/chair is inspected for any loose ends or imperfections. If needed, additional padding is added to ensure the sofa/chair is comfortable and retains its shape.
7. Cost Considerations: Re-upholstering a sofa/chair can be expensive, especially if designer fabric is used. However, it is often more economical than purchasing a new, high-quality sofa/chair. The cost varies depending on the fabric choice, the complexity of the design, and the labour involved.
8. DIY vs. Professional Upholstery: DIY: If you have sewing skills and the right tools, re-upholstering a sofa can be a rewarding DIY project. However, it requires a lot of time and effort, and mistakes can be costly. Professional Services: Hiring a professional upholsterer ensures a high-quality finish, but it comes with higher costs. Professionals have the experience and tools needed to handle complex designs and materials.
9. Environmental Impact: Re-upholstering is a sustainable option, as it reduces waste by giving old furniture a new life rather than discarding it. It's a way to recycle and reuse materials, contributing to a lower environmental footprint.
10. Longevity and Maintenance: The new upholstery can significantly extend the life of the sofa/chair, especially if you choose durable fabrics and materials. Proper maintenance, such as regular cleaning and avoiding direct sunlight, will help the re-upholstered sofa/chair last for many years. Re-upholstery is a great way to preserve the comfort and style of a beloved piece of furniture while updating its look to suit your current tastes. fabrics/trimmings or collection and delivery location.

CUSTOM SEATING
We strongly advise you to consider the upholstery at the planning stage of the carpentry. We are more than happy to consult with your carpenter/fitter/project manager on design and measurements. All too often we get customers coming to us for upholstery as an after thought, once the seating has already been fitted and the space for the upholstery has been left too large; which means unnecessary costs or too small; which means not very comfortable.
Please note: When asking for quotations, customer's measurements will be used as a rough guide only and final quotations will be based on the upholsterers measurements.
THE UPHOLSTERY PROCESS
Due to a high volume of enquiries, we try to give an initial estimate from your e-mailed/whatsapped photos, to help you determine if we can meet your requirements. If so, we are happy to arrange a pattern-book viewing, to help you choose fabrics, and trimmings.
Once you have chosen your fabrics and trimmings, if your furniture is too large to bring to show us, we will arrange a home visit to measure up and finalise your quotation.
The quotation will be e-mailed to you and you will be asked to check it carefully and read a copy of our Ts & Cs. We will also let you know when we expect to begin the work, and how long it will take. If you are happy to go ahead, we then ask for a deposit to book in your work.
We are very flexible and can work around holidays/decorating etc but once the deposit has been paid, we cannot change fabrics and trimmings or custom designs.
